The
Gathering Table
Sunday and most holiday evenings are a time of fellowship and community
dining in the Salvation Army dining room at Third and Eddy Streets
in Grand Island, NE. Delicious meals are served to the public at
no cost by various volunteer teams from local and area churches,
civic clubs, businesses and get-together group organizations. The
meal is called The Gathering Table. The informal
meal is designed to honor neighborly men, women, children and families
gathering in a pleasant environment to relax and visit while enjoying
a well-planned and tasty meal, prepared and served with friendly
hospitality and care in mind.
The Salvation Army itself also regularly serves breakfast and supper
meals Monday through Friday at the same location. Messiah Lutheran
Church serves a Saturday evening meal from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
in their fellowship hall at Seventh and Locust Streets in Grand
Island, NE.
The Gathering Table was started in October of 2006
and has grown to the point that its schedule has already been filled
through 2008.
The particular group of ten to twelve persons preparing and serving
the meal meets at the Salvation Army dining hall at 3:30 p.m. on
Sunday with their workers and all ingredients to prepare The Gathering
Table meal. Meal time is from approximately 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
All of the facilities in the kitchen, including stove, ovens micro-wave,
dishwasher, cooking utensils, plates, cups, saucers, cutlery, glasses,
cleaning and custodial supplies, garbage sacks and containers are
available for use without charge. Tables and chairs are already
set up to seat approximately 150 guests. Clean and ample restroom
facilities are also available. All facilities are completely ADA
accessible. Cleaning up after meal-serving time includes dishwashing,
kitchen appliance cleaning and washing all table tops, sweeping
and wet-mop cleaning of all dining and restroom floors and sinks.
Tied garbage sacks are to be moved to their out-door container locations.
Project Hunger continues to recruit entities from the area in order
to maintain an ample variety of current and future host groups to
help assure The Gathering Table tradition. If your
group would prayerfully consider to be included in this powerful
and rewarding need, please contact Karl Hughes, The Gathering
Table Coordinator, at 308-583-2210. Your efforts are definitely
needed and appreciated. Any persons or prospective groups are welcome
to observe and help existing groups.
You are always encouraged to invite additional members, families
and acquaintances from your church, or group to attend.
